Family Advocacy Support Service Assistant

The Family Advocacy Support Service Assistant supports the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) for the Installation Management Command (IMCOM). The Family Advocacy Program provides comprehensive services to prevent domestic abuse, child abuse and neglect, and addresses child on child problematic sexual behavior through advocacy, support, and training. The Family Advocacy Support Service Assistant supports the Family Advocacy Program at military installation both in the United States and overseas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Family Advocacy Program Manager (FAPM) with the coordination and implementation of FAP efforts to include FAP Trainings, Problematic Sexual Behavior- Child and Youth (PSB-CY), Incident Determination Committee-Clinical Case (IDC-CCSM), Victim Advocacy, New Parent Support and other programs as needed
  • Coordinate schedules, provide logistical support, perform administrative functions, and maintain calendars, training certificates, assist with completing minutes for Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and IDC-CCSM- Family Advocacy System of Record (FASOR)
  • Assist with FAPM with establishing SOPs, Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) and Memorandum of Agreements (MOAs)
  • Maintain FAP Annual/Monthly Trainings Roster and assist with maintaining certification files/check list and prepare for certification review
  • Provides administrative, technical, and prevention services under the direction of the site FAPM
  • Assists with prevention services and under direction of the site FAPM, may assist with New Parent Support Program, Family Advocacy Program Outreach activities, and the Victim Advocate Program

Required Education/Experience

  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in a social science area
  • Must possess at least three years of direct work experience in family violence (e.g., child abuse/domestic abuse)
  • Must possess at least three years of administrative assistance experience

Minimum Required Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of military personnel automation systems and PC and possess good analytical skills, time management, and be an independent thinker
  • Prior military experience or experience with military programs
  • Must be familiar with U.S. Army rank structure and military culture
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with others, both in person and/or by telephone to conduct business
  • Travel will be required as needed
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite programs
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate fluently in English
  • Must have strong listening skills and strong organizational skills
  • Must possess a current and valid driver’s license
New Parent Support Home Visitor

The primary goal of the New Parent Support Program is to enhance the lives of infants, toddlers, children, and parents; promote safety, health, and well-being; and help families thrive by empowering parents with information to meet the challenges of parenthood while maintaining a military lifestyle. The program offers a variety of services, including providing information about prenatal health, infant care, nursing/breastfeeding, early child development, bonding with your baby, safe sleep environments, shaken baby syndrome (abusive head trauma), parenting education and more. The program helps military parents, including expectant parents, provide a nurturing environment for their children. Parenthood is like any other job; there’s a lot of learning at first no matter if it is your first child or not.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify and report suspected child abuse and neglect, domestic abuse, and Problematic Sexual Behavior in Children and Youth (PSB-CY)
  • Conduct crisis intervention and coordinator referrals for services
  • Educate installation personnel on the most effective responses and resources for domestic abuse, child abuse and neglect, and Problematic Sexual Behavior in Children and Youth (PSB-CY) on behalf of victims and at-risk family members
  • Educate new parents and care givers on shaken baby syndrome, sudden unexplained infant death, and safe sleeping environments
  • Educate and provide support for postpartum depression and other mental health issues impacting maternal and paternal child health
  • Educate parents and care providers on the role of attachment in the social emotional development of children and strategies for enhancing bonding and attachment
  • Educate parents and care providers on child development milestones and referral procedures for indicators of special needs or developmental delays
  • Assess and strengthen adaptation to parenthood
  • Assess and strengthen parental capacity for problem-solving, building and sustaining trusting relationships, and seeking help
  • Promote developmentally appropriate parenting skills and disciplinary techniques, and parent and child communication skills
  • Facilitate informal and formal community networks to build positive relationships and reduce social isolation
  • Utilize community-based services and formal and informal community networks to provide concrete support for families who may be in crisis
  • Apply strategies to engage and support the service member’s role in childbearing especially during separations due to deployment and other military operations
  • Screen, access, address protective and risk factors associated with child abuse and neglect using a strengths-based family centered developmental approach

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Current unrestricted license in the United States OR
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Current, valid, unrestricted clinical license in the United States
  • Must have at least two years of direct work experience in child abuse/domestic abuse, maternal/child health, or medical social work.
  • Must have experience in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse/neglect, domestic abuse, and Problematic Sexual Behavior in Children and Youth (PSB-CY)

Victim Advocate

Victim Advocates provide services to prevent domestic abuse and sexual assault through advocacy, education, training, and awareness programs educating Soldiers, Family members, and Army civilians under the Army Family Advocacy Program (FAP).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicate understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for victims and non-abusing parent/guardian when handling victim cases.
  • Effectively communicate with victims, develop trusting helping relationships.
  • Work effectively with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Intervene in crisis situations exercising careful judgement, applying flexibility and innovative problem solving, and taking appropriate precautions to protect the welfare of those to whom they provide services under the guiding principle of “do no harm.”
  • Work independently to assess risk, develop, implement, and evaluate safety and intervention plans to meet victim needs.
  • Operate within guidelines of the U.S. Army’s Family Advocacy Program, Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate Program.
  • Conduct briefings to small and large groups of civilians, Soldiers, and Commanders.
  • Work cooperatively with Army Community Services and Family Advocacy Program staff, military, and civilian medical, social service, law enforcement, and legal personnel on behalf of victims.
  • Educate installation personnel on the most effective responses and resources for domestic abuse on behalf of victims and at-risk family members.

Required Education/Experience

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in social work, psychology, marriage, family and child counseling, counseling or behavioral science, education, community health or public health.
  • Must have a minimum of two years’ experience providing comprehensive assistance and support to victims of domestic abuse.
  • Must have a minimum of two years’ experience in working with a military or civilian social service agency serving military families.
  • VAs will be certified by the National Advocate Credentialing Program at the time of hire or within one year of hire.
  • Thorough knowledge of Family violence dynamics, trauma informed advocacy services, environmental stressors, safety planning, risk assessments, local community resources, and federal and state laws pertaining to domestic abuse, Family law and the Victim Rights Bill
